Discharge Upgrade · Boards
Which board do I apply to?
There are two kinds of boards. Which one you use depends mostly on how long ago you were discharged.
Discharge Review Board
- Within 15 years of discharge
- Form DD-293
- Can change characterization and reason
- You can ask for a personal hearing
Board for Correction (BCMR/BCNR)
- More than 15 years, or after a DRB denial
- Form DD-149
- Can fix almost any record error
- Handles general court-martial cases
Evidence that helps your case
- A personal statement: what happened, what you were going through, and your life since.
- Medical records or a doctor's letter connecting PTSD, TBI, MST or another condition to your behavior in service.
- Buddy statements from people who served with you.
- Character letters: employers, clergy, community — showing who you are today.
- Proof of work, school, volunteering or treatment since discharge.
